Some Probiotics Can Help us Lose Weight

According to a small study, the probiotic Bifidobacterium breve can be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet to successfully control the weight and weight loss of children. Its results will be presented at the European Congress of Endocrinology.

Our intestinal microbiome has a dynamic population of over 100 trillion microorganisms, which maintains the body’s immune function, normal metabolism and protection against pathogens. Diet is believed to be a key element in maintaining the intestinal microflora, and its imbalance leads to infections and a number of diseases.

Probiotics are live bacteria that have health benefits. We take these through certain foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, pickles and other fermented products. The microorganisms that make up the intestinal microflora can help digestion, the synthesis of vitamins and the suppression of pathogenic cells and bacteria.

Bifidobacteria are one of the representatives of probiotics that live naturally in the intestines. They contribute to the regulation of the immune system, the provision of nutrients, the breakdown of carbohydrates and fiber.
There are probiotics that produce short-chain fatty acids that also play a role in regulating intestinal health, appetite and weight.

Scientists have observed that probiotics and specifically bifidobacteria can be used specifically for weight loss.
The study team included 100 children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 18 with obesity and insulin resistance – a condition in which blood sugar cannot be used by the body and the pancreas is unable to produce more insulin to unlock the cells to absorb it.

High blood sugar levels create potentially dangerous conditions, one of which is type 2 diabetes.

For the purposes of the study, the children were placed on a Mediterranean-type diet, with calorie restriction according to individual needs. They also received a probiotic for two months or a placebo for those in the control group.

At the end of the study, both groups reported a decrease in BMI, waist circumference, blood pressure, insulin resistance and the concentration of E. coli bacteria in the gut.
However, better results were registered in children taking probiotics.

The daily provision of probiotics with food is proving to be an important factor in maintaining good intestinal health, and hence overall health. It is advisable not to miss these products in the child’s menu, but on the contrary to take care of their constant provision.

To maintain a good level of probiotics, it is not enough just to ingest them. A diet must be established to provide conditions for their functioning. This is the measure of taking enough probiotics with food – figuratively speaking, this is the food needed for probiotics.

Processed foods and stress are harmful to our intestinal health, so natural cuisine and products such as bananas, onions, garlic, leeks and more are needed.

Probiotics in the form of food supplements cannot replace a varied diet, and the safety and effect of many of them must be proven through clinical trials and approval by the relevant institutions.
Before starting a special diet that includes supplements, parents should consult with specialists to advise what is best that can be done for the child in terms of nutrition in order to reduce and control body weight.
